After striking out on the Kirk Cousins Sweepstakes, the New York Jets were able to shore up the quarterback position with the addition of Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown.

However, it seems they are not satisfied with their future under center. That's why they traded their sixth, 37th and 49th overall selections, along with a 2019 second-rounder to the Indianapolis Colts in order to move up to the No. 3 spot in the 2018 NFL Draft, presumably to draft another quarterback.

The Jets have caught some flak for giving up a bounty of picks just to move up three spots in the draft for something that is hardly a guarantee. According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, the last team to trade up to the No. 3 spot gave up much less than New York did:

The last time a team moved up to the third overall pick was in the 2013 NFL draft, and that team gave up a whole lot less. That year, the Dolphins got pick No. 3 from the Raiders, giving up only pick No. 12 and pick No. 42. Miami drafted defensive end Dion Jordan, who managed a grand total of three sacks as a Dolphin, which shows the danger of trading up in the draft: You don’t actually know if the guy you’re trading up for is going to be any good.

The Miami Dolphins' decision to give up so much for a bust like defensive end Dion Jordan has served as a cautionary tale for teams around the league. However, this situation is different considering it is a quarterback that is likely on the Jets' radar.

Having a competent player under center is undoubtedly the most important quality a franchise can have. This became evident with the quarterback frenzy that has taken place this offseason. Fortunately, this year's quarterback-heavy draft gives a number of teams a chance at potentially securing a quality gunslinger for the future. That said, it seems new York already has a firm idea of which player fits the mold for them.
