The New York Jets didn't just make a splash by signing running back Le'Veon Bell in NFL free agency. They also landed linebacker C.J. Mosley, one of the best defensive players on the market.

The acquisition of Mosley was not something the Jets were expecting, and head coach Adam Gase was very surprised that he even hit the free-agent market, to begin with:

“We were shocked,” Gase said, according to Bob Glauber of Newsday. “You start thinking, ‘There’s no way he’s going to get out of there.’ Then when he hit the market, it was a full-court press for us.”

By “there,” Gase was, of course, referring to the Baltimore Ravens, Mosley's former team.

But, the Jets were able to snare Mosley on a five-year, $85 million contract.

The 26-year-old is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played 15 games and finished with 105 tackles, a half of a sack, an interception, and five passes defended en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

Mosley, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Ravens in the first round (17th pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He had a monster rookie season, racking up 151 tackles, three sacks, a couple of picks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and eight passes defended, making the Pro Bowl as a result.

Overall, Mosley made four Pro Bowl appearances in five years with Baltimore.

The Jets won just four games this past season and have not made the playoffs since the 2010 campaign when they made it to the AFC Championship Game.
