There's no question how horrible of a season Sam Darnold and the New York Jets are having. With the Jets' struggles this season, there are speculations on whether New York still intends to keep its former no. 3 overall pick as part of the team's future. While Darnold's future with the team that drafted him is up in the air, he is watching Baker Mayfield, the no. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, have a spectacular season with the Cleveland Browns.
The Jets' quarterback admitted he hasn't been watching the man taken two spots above him, but acknowledged how “great” as season the Browns quarterback is having.
Sam Darnold and Mayfield obviously have some history with each other. The USC star had been projected by many mock drafts to go no. 1 to the Browns. Instead, Cleveland went with Baker Mayfield as Darnold fell to no. 3 with the Jets.
It's worth playing the “what if” game right now and thinking how things would have gone if Darnold went to the Browns. Instead, two years later, Cleveland could make the playoffs at the expense of Darnold and the Jets in their upcoming Week 16 matchup.
With a win this Sunday and a loss by the Indianapolis Colts to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Browns will clinch their first playoff berth in two decades. Should Cleveland defeat the Jets and Indianapolis hand Pittsburgh's fourth straight defeat, then the Week 17 showdown between the Browns and the Steelers will be for the AFC North crown.
After facing the Browns, the Jets will conclude another forgettable season with a road game against the New England Patriots in Week 17.
