With the future of Chelsea FC's ownership up in the air, bids from potential buyers of the club are reportedly due by Friday. Among those looking to purchase the club from Roman Abramovich is New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. According to the NY Post, Johnson submitted a bit worth $2.6 billion in hopes of landing the club from its controversial owner.

The NY post reports that the Jets owner's bid is not the largest submitted for the London-based football club. The Saudi Media Group reportedly launched a bid worth £2.7 billion ($3.54 billion). Johnson is facing competition from other potential buyers, including the Saudi Media Group, as well as the Ricketts family, who own the Chicago Cubs.

Johnson is familiar with London, having served as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom during Donald Trump's presidency. Some believe that will give him an edge in his hopes of landing the team. The Jets are also looking to grow their brand in the UK, so this could be a win-win situation for Johnson.

Chelsea went up for sale after sanctions were placed against owner Roman Abramovich due to alleged ties to Russia's Vladimir Putin. After the nation invaded Ukraine, the UK government froze Abramovich's assets, including the club. As a result, Abramovich agreed to sell the club, in a process that is still ongoing. The sale of the club will be dictated by the UK government, who ruled that Abramovich will not be allowed to turn a profit in the sale.

Abramovich purchased Chelsea back in 2003 for just £60 million, investing a vast amount of his own money into the club and transforming them into the Premier League giants they are today.
