Despite his injury-plagued first three seasons with his team, Miami Heat big man Josh McRoberts has exercised his player option for next season. He is slated to earn $6 million on the final year of his contract.

The development was reported by Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel, and this means that the 30-year-old's salary will be on the Heat's books next year. Since he will not take part in free agency, the team will only have the option to package him in a deal should they wish to part ways with him.

“Josh McRoberts has put himself on the Miami Heat's books for next season, which also means the Heat now are eligible to trade the off-injured outside-shooting power forward.”

“Because McRoberts no longer is eligible for free agency, he is now available for the Heat to package in a trade, should the team so desire.”

McRoberts signed with the South Beach team back in 2014 as he was seen to be a compliment to Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade‘s games, especially with his ability to stretch the floor due to his outside shooting. However, things have not gone according to plan as he suffered multiple injuries and has only appeared in 81 games so far for the Heat.

His agent, Mike Conley Sr., talked about his client already knowing what to do with his player option as he is healthy now and wanting to prove himself as deserving for a roster spot.

“He already knew he was opting in.”

“It's always been a matter of him being healthy, and he's healthy now.”

Even with his optimism to show the Heat that he can be the player they've always wanted him to be, it still won't come as a surprise if they trade him, or even use the “stretch provision” to waive him and save $4 million in cap space this summer.
