After making a handful of big moves to clear out sufficient cap room for Jalen Brunson, the New York Knicks succeeded in luring the ex-Dallas Mavericks point guard to The Big Apple via free agency. It seemed like the Knicks were more than willing to put all their eggs on the Brunson basket, and after giving him a four-year deal worth $104 million, you would think that this is exactly what they did here.

Well, it seems that the Knicks have another major trick up their sleeve coming. According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Brunson signing was a mere precursor to what New York has planned ahead. All this could lead to the Knicks finally landing Donovan Mitchell via a blockbuster trade deal with the Utah Jazz:

The Knicks view the recently signed Jalen Brunson as a key ingredient to the their plans of adding a bona fide All-Star such as Mitchell, sources said. Having a table-setter and secondary scorer like Brunson already on the roster could be an attractive proposition for a potential top-line player like Mitchell.

The Jazz may now be open to dealing their cornerstone superstar, and you can be sure that the Knicks, who themselves have been long-time admirers of Mitchell, will definitely be in the mix. New York will reportedly need to muster up a major haul in order to pique Utah's interest, and at this point, the Knicks appear to be willing to indulge the Jazz.

If New York is able to pull this off and put forward a Donovan Mitchell-Jalen Brunson backcourt partnership next season, then all the struggles this team (and its fanbase) have been through of late might just be all worth it.
