After honoring future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant by retiring both of his jerseys numbers late last year, the Los Angeles Lakers will honor another iconic player in the team's history in April.

According to a press release sent out by the team on Tuesday, the 16-time NBA champions will unveil a statue in April of one of their first real superstars. Elgin Baylor will be immortalized in bronze in a few months time joining former teammate Jerry West as one of six statues honoring some of the best players in team history including Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Shaquille O'Neal along with one of the greatest broadcasters in all of sports, Chick Hearn.

Team president Jeanie Buss made the following statement about the team deciding to give Baylor a statue outside of the Staples Center.

“I am thrilled that 60 years after the Minneapolis Lakers drafted Elgin, we are able to celebrate and honor him with a statue,” said Lakers CEO and Controlling Owner Jeanie Buss. “Not only is Elgin a part of the Lakers family, his contributions to the game of basketball earned him a place in the Hall of Fame. His list of accomplishments are unparalleled and I can’t wait to see his statue at Star Plaza alongside the other Lakers legends.”

Baylor is one of the great players in Lakers history that doesn't really get the respect he deserves for the impact he's had on the game and the organization. The first pick in the 1958 NBA Draft played all 14 seasons of his career in the league with the Lakers and helped the team make the transition from Minneapolis to Los Angeles in 1960 as the star attraction alongside West.

Although Baylor fell short of a winning a title during his career as he retired 10 games into the 1971-72 NBA season, the legendary forward is still widely regarded as one of the best players to have ever played the game.

During his incredible career with the Lakers, Baylor racked up 11 All-Star selections, an All-Star Game MVP, NBA Rookie of the Year, and earned All-NBA First Team honors 10 times. Baylor finished his playing days in 1971 with 23,149 points, 11,463 rebounds, 3,650 assists, and the distinction of being one of the greatest players of his era.

Baylor's statue is set to be unveiled on April 6 ahead of the matchup between the Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
