Frank Vogel may have two of the best players in the NBA, but the Los Angeles Lakers head coach admits it will take more than just two superstars to catapult the team to title contention.

In an interview with Mike Trudell of Lakers.com, Vogel opened up about the Lakers' need to improve on the defensive end. While he noted that having Anthony Davis, JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard will improve their rim protection, he emphasized Los Angeles must still “evolve” defensively.

“The offensive evolution has changed that whole mindset of camping out a rim protector for 48 minutes. It’s just difficult to do that. Most teams play at least half the game with five 3-point shooters out there. Sometimes the whole game. … So it’s difficult to guard and it’s difficult to take a McGee or a Howard and say, ‘OK now we’re going to take care of everything at the rim,’ because they’re guarding strong side corner, they’re guarding the top of the key, they’re not just in the dunker all the time,” Vogel explained.

“We still have to evolve tremendously defensively in terms of what we did in Indiana considering what this defense here is going to look like.”

Vogel was known for coaching the defensive-minded Pacers teams in the 2010s, led by center Roy Hibbert and wing Paul George. The Lakers, however, finished last season with the 13th-best defensive rating, per NBA.com. That's not a bad start, but some of the defensive deficiencies could be attributed to JaVale McGee and LeBron James.

With Anthony Davis on board, along with a two-time NBA champion in shooting guard Danny Green, the Lakers can expect an overall improvement on defense. But unless L.A. is a top 5-10 defensive team, it doesn't have a chance making a deep run in the 2020 playoffs.
