LeBron James is hoping to honor the passing of former NBA commissioner David Stern by immortalizing his name with an NBA award or a day that bears his name.

“Either if it’s an award, or, I don’t know, a day? During the course of an NBA season, there’s David Stern Day?,” said James, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “We can figure it out.”

While this is clearly reactionary to Stern's passing at the flip of the calendar year, it is very possible that the NBA honors him in one way or another.

The NBA championship trophy is named after former commissioner Larry O'Brien, who preceded Stern before he took over in 1984. The NBA MVP award is named after the first commissioner and president of the league, Maurice Podoloff.

While the possibility of renaming existing awards like Most Improved Player or All-Star MVP is an option, there is also the chance to create a new one altogether to represent his 30-year tenure as commissioner and a lifetime of devotion to the game.

The Pro Basketball Writers Association created the Magic Johnson Award as a way to honor Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, who had retired from the game after he was diagnosed with HIV. The award recognizes excellence on the court and cooperation and dignity with the media and the public.

There are plenty of qualities that could be celebrated with a David Stern Award, including his integrity, risk-taking, fearlessness, and his desire to take the game above and beyond what most thought it could be.

Stern died on Wednesday after a battle with a brain hemorrhage that had gone on for nearly three weeks. He was 77 years old.
