According to Adrian Wojnarowski, if the Los Angeles Lakers are drafting their fourth pick, it simply means that they're in trouble. What Wojnarowski means is that the Lakers should use the fourth pick as an asset and insert it into a trade package to acquire Anthony Davis ahead of the draft. Come draft night, if they'll be the ones to select the fourth pick, it means that they did not seal the deal on the Davis trade.

“If the Lakers are drafting at No. 4 on draft night, they're in trouble because that means they didn't make an Anthony Davis trade done… Right now, they are not a frontrunner or even really a major consideration among any of the elite free agents.”

With the signing of James last summer, the Lakers made it clear that they want to win now. Last regular season was a disappointment brought about by injuries and slow progress.

They cannot afford another season like that. As such, the Lakers have no time to select a top pick and develop him — hoping that he'd quickly turn out to be the necessary piece to complete the championship puzzle.

James needs an elite star with him. Someone like Davis who's already at the prime of his career and more importantly, someone who's as hungry as the Lakers and James for a championship.
