The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to re-sign point guard Rajon Rondo, according to Brad Turner of The Los Angeles Times.

Turner said on ESPNLA radio (h/t LakeShowWorld) that the Lakers like his common bond with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, who was traded to the Lakers in principle over the weekend.

The Lakers are also chasing a third star to put themselves as frontrunners in the Western Conference, looking to add the likes of Kemba Walker, Kawhi Leonard or Jimmy Butler, as the free agency period looms closer.

Adding Walker to the mix would immediately put Rondo on a bench role, as carrying him as a starter, now that the team has traded Lonzo Ball to New Orleans, would give the Lakers the same issue of a non-shooting point guard in the starting lineup.

Rondo is still a starter-caliber point guard, but one that is much-less effective at his job without effective shooters around him.

A lineup with James, a 33.9% shooter from deep last season, Davis (33.1%) and Rondo (35.9%) would render this team with the same issue it had last season — a dire lack of outside shooters.

While the sentiment of keeping him for chemistry reasons makes sense, building a roster based off previous rapport with both players does little to impact winning — something the Lakers will have to do at all costs after mortgaging their future by trading for Davis to squeeze the most out of James' career.
