The Detroit Lions began training camp with Damon Harrison on the non-football injury list. On Thursday morning, Detroit activated Harrison to the roster per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Before training camps began, both Harrison and Darius Slay were vying for new contracts with the franchise. Neither of them received a new deal but both will now be on the practice field.

The Lions traded for Harrison ahead of the trade deadline last year from the New York Giants. As a result, the Lions' run defense benefitted greatly while the Giants' faltered.

After the addition of Harrison, Detroit ended the season with the 10th-best rushing defense. Throughout his NFL career, “Big Snacks” has been known as one of the league's most stout run defenders.

For the Lions, Harrison is crucial to their success as a defense. Matt Patricia knows just how vital it is to have a sturdy run defender in the middle of the defensive line. Identically, Patricia benefitted during his time with the New England Patriots having Vince Wilfork manning the defensive tackle position.

This year, the Lions seem to have one of the NFL's best defensive fronts on paper. Earlier this offseason, the team added Trey Flowers from Patricia's former team and recently added Mike Daniels from the Green Bay Packers.

Along with those additions, Detroit has Romeo Okwara and A'Shawn Robinson to wreak havoc on opposing defenses.

The return of Harrison to the Lions allows the team to get closer to being full-strength before they face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 of the regular season.
