The Detroit Lions wide receiver group just got a little bit stronger. Tommylee Lewis was just activated off of the PUP list, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

This is a good move for the Lions. Getting Lewis back from injury immediately adds depth to the receiving room, as well as provides some running back help in a pinch. Although Lewis is listed as a receiver, the former New Orleans Saint lined up in the backfield on occasion. Lewis hasn't been at full health since the offseason began, as he was also limited during spring workouts.

Lewis came back to field at the right time, as it looks like the Lions have a role cut out for him. Detroit cut running back Theo Riddick earlier in camp. Riddick was primarily a receiving threat during his time in the Motor City. Lewis is a wide receiver by trade, but can definitely play a little running back. He gives coach Matt Patricia a legitimate weapon out of the backfield, sort of like James White of the New England Patriots.

Coach Patricia certainly knows the value of a good receiving back from his time in New England, and knows how to utilize them. If Lewis can fill that role, he'll be looking for a much bigger paycheck next free agency.

While it's likely the former Saint will play some running back, he can also contribute as a wide receiver. The Lions have a deep receiver room, but can always use added depth. Lewis projects as the fifth wide receiver on the chart, and is a sleeper to make a real impact.
