Frank Gore is not yet ready to call it a career after he was cut by the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason. The veteran running back is still in search of a new team for next season, and his first visit will take him to Detroit to meet up with the Lions within the week.

Gore will hardly be the first veteran back to visit Detroit this offseason. Jonathan Stewart and DeMarco Murray have already made the same trip as the Lions have intensified their search for a new running back.

Gore was recently released by the Colts after three years in Indianapolis. Even at age 34, he had another productive year as he finished with 961 rushing yards and also added 245 receiving yards. Apart from keeping his impressive streak of playing all 16 games alive for the seventh straight year, Gore also kept up his remarkable run of consecutive seasons with at least 1,200 yards from scrimmage to 12.

The Lions could certainly use a reliable back like Gore in their backfield. Their running game situation has been so bad that they haven’t even had a 600-yard rushing in each of the last three years. Ameer Abdullah led the team last year with a paltry 552 rushing yards.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford has had to shoulder a lot of the load within the Lions offense during that time. But if they can find that productive back to pair next to him and new head coach Matt Patricia improves the defense as many expect him to do, the Lions might just find another level next season.
