Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has explained the situation of veterans Raphael Varane and Edinson Cavani.

After being sidelined for five weeks now, Raphael Varane and Edinson Cavani have finally made their return to training. However, the pair will still not be included in the Manchester United squad that will take on Young Boys on Wednesday, the club's manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed.

“They both cannot play tomorrow [against Young Boys] but they were part of the training session today. Edi even yesterday, Rapha [Varane] it was the first time he was on the pitch with the team,” Rangnick revealed via Manchester Evening News.

“If everything goes well I expect them both back in full training next week so from Monday they will be participating in all training sessions,” the manager plotted. “They're both top players. Of course we would be happy to have them on board as soon as possible but, especially with Rapha and his injury record in the past, we need to make sure that we will have him until the end of the season, so it is also about sustainability and not only getting him fit as soon as possible.”

Both Cavani and Varane are expected to add depth in Manchester United's attack and defense. However, they need to stay healthy for the remainder of the season.

Cavani had to nurse a discomfort in his tendon while Varane had to suffer from a hamstring injury. The pair last played for the Red Devils during the match against Atalanta more than a month ago.
