Why The Marlins Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Miami Marlins are currently last in the National League East standings and sit 24 games back of the lead. They've had a tough run during the month of June and have posted just a 6-13 record. Still, they come into this series following back-to-back 2-1 series wins over the St. Louis Cardinals and Seattle Mariners. Over the last 7 days, they've gone 4-2 while batting .239 from the plate, a slight increase from their overall season average. The wins will come sparingly if they can't improve quickly, but their last few game indicate trends in the right direction.

Yonny Chirinos will be making just his second start of the season after notching a six-inning winning outing during his debut for the Marlins. He only allowed two earned runs during the 4-3 victory over the Cardinals and he'll be making yet another start a week later. He was also able to notch six strikeouts during the debut and his control was solid throughout his whole time. If he can build upon his first performance and come out here with the same confidence, they should be able to give the Royals a run for their money in this one.

Why The Royals Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Kansas City Royals are currently third in the American League Central race and they sit nine games back of the leading Cleveland Guardians. They come into this series just 3-7 over their last 10 games and 4-6 over their last 10 games at home. Much of their troubles have come from the plate, scoring just six total runs over the last five games. For a team that had been seeing the ball well all year, this is a particularly rough stretch for them as Bobby Witt Jr. and his teammates have cooled-off a bit. This will be their first and only series against the Marlins this year, so they're hoping to capitalize on a sliding team and get some wins of their own.

Their best rotational pitcher this year Seth Lugo will get the start behind his 10-2 record, which is tied for most wins by any pitcher in the MLB. His 2.42 ERA is also the fifth-lowest in the majors and he's been lights-out over his last two starts, allowing just four earned while striking out 12. He's a perfect 7-0 when pitching on the road and opponents are only batting .269 off him at home. Whenever Lugo takes the mound for the Royals, you know he gives them the best chance at winning the game.

Final Marlins-Royals Prediction & Pick

Both of these teams are dealing with a mini-slump at the moment, but the Miami Marlins' issues have persisted for much of the season. While the Kansas City Royals are experiencing a small downswing in production, they're bound to return to their previous numbers and continue riding their hot bats into the summer.

Yonny Chirinos is making his second start of the season for the Marlins and judging by his first start, he seems to be a reliable option for them moving forward as he can press the action into the later innings while limiting runs. Seth Lugo, however, has been one of the best flat-out pitchers in the MLB this season and he's the number one ace for this Royals team at the moment. We have to give the sizable pitching advantage to the Royals and understand why they've been made the favorites for this series.

For our final prediction, we can't fade Seth Lugo as he's bound to put up a solid effort starting for his team and looking for his 11th win on the season.
