Dallas Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle says backup point guard Devin Harris is out for at least a couple of games with a strained left hamstring, via Dwain Price the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Harris suffered the injury during Wednesday's opening night road loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Devin Harris signed a one-year free agent deal worth the veteran’s minimum with the Mavs in the summer. Dallas lost guard Yogi Ferrell the Sacramento Kings and was in need of point guard depth.

Harris began last season with the Mavs, but was traded to the Denver Nuggets at the 2018 February trade deadline. The now 15-year pro averaged 8.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 2017-18 with the Mavs and Nuggets while shooting 41.2 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 83.5 percent from the free-throw line.

Devin Harris, 35, has played nine seasons with the Mavs. He holds overall career averages of 11.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in 917 NBA contests with the Mavs, New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn Nets), Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks and Nuggets.

Rookies Jalen Brunson and Ryan Broekhoff will see extended playing time for the Mavs until Harris returns to the lineup. Dallas hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday.
