Although the Dallas Mavericks are highly considered as a vastly improved team following the acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis earlier this year, they weren't able to sign any top-tier free agent this summer. They even missed out on mid-tier guys like Patrick Beverley and Danny Green. Still, with the team that they have right now, they are expected to compete for a playoff spot when fully healthy.

Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas believes the reason why the Mavs haven't been able to sign top-tier free agents lately is because of the market size. In an interview with Fanatics View, he said big market teams will always have the advantage because of the amount of money players can make off the court.

“The NBA is designed for players not to leave. You know, if I'm sitting at 250 (million) here, and the Mavs can only offer me 190, that's 60 million. You know this is not a big enough market for me to make it up outside of basketball. So that's why LA's always had the advantage, New York's always had the advantage, Chicago, because they can make it up in off the court money, in shoo money. Because you know in big market, your shoo money doubles that big.”

Gilbert Arenas does have a great point, especially after what happened in this year's offseason. Four of the top five players in the league are either in Los Angeles or Brooklyn, New York. And while small-market teams like the Mavs can be competitive, they really don't have a lot to offer outside of basketball.

Still, if there's one thing that future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki has taught us, it's the fact that you can be loyal in a team like the Mavericks, as long as playing basketball and winning are your main reasons for joining the team. Also, Dallas isn't exactly “small” which is worth noting.
