Wesley Matthews has long been rumored to be among the primary chips the Dallas Mavericks could give away in a trade with the L.A. Clippers for big man DeAndre Jordan. According to Tim Cato of The Athletic, however, the Mavs informed the swingman prior to Jordan’s decision to opt out of the final year of his deal with the Clippers that he would not be shipped away.

“The Mavericks told Wes Matthews yesterday that he would not be involved in a DeAndre trade, I’m told. trade talks died off today leading up to DeAndre’s opt out.”

If Matthews was ever part of any trade talks in order to extract Jordan from the Clippers, those rumors are now down the drain, as the Mavericks could just sign the athletic center in free agency. In addition to that, the Clippers did not seem to have any inclination of giving up Jordan in a trade, especially if that meant absorbing Matthews’ expiring contract.

In an earlier report, Marc Stein of ESPN said that the Clippers did not like the idea of having Wesley Matthews around, perhaps because his presence would further crowd the team’s already loaded backcourt and could stunt the progress of their rookies, Jerome Robinson and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Matthews, who averaged 12.7 points on 40.6 percent shooting from the field, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 63 games last season, is owed $18.6 million this coming 2018-19 season before becoming a free agent next summer.
