The New York Mets' have been absolutely phenomenal to start the season. They have a stellar record of 30-17, and have beaten some tough teams along the way. However, it seems like the team is about to hit a rocky patch in their road to the playoffs, with Max Scherzer set to miss almost two months due to an injury.

The exit of one ace could potentially lead to a return from another ace. Jacob deGrom, the Mets' star pitcher, revealed that his shoulder injury has been healing up quite well. It's a great report for a team that won't be having one of their best arms for a significant period. (via USA Today)

“Normally bone heals stronger, so the last report was good, and they said it was completely healed, so now just making sure it handles the throwing and that nothing pops up,” deGrom said. “The way it’s going so far, I feel great.”

While deGrom is feeling well enough to throw again, he and the Mets have decided to slow things down. Stress fractures are a delicate injury to deal with, after all. There's no need for the team to bring him back so soon, since they're doing so well. It's better for them to err on the side of caution and wait until he's fully cleared to return.

How the Mets fare during the one to two month stretch without Scherzer will likely play a factor in Jacob deGrom's return date. If the team starts sliding down without Scherzer in the fold, the team might be more inclined to bring back their ace sooner than anticipated.
