The New York Mets announced somewhat of a surprising roster move on Tuesday morning. After claiming left-hander Locke St. John off of waivers, the team revealed that Jacob deGrom had been transferred to the 60-day IL. deGrom has been sidelined the entire season thus far while recovering from a shoulder injury, and the Mets were anticipating having him back at some point in June.

While fans may be worried by the news that deGrom has been moved to the 60-day IL, there really isn't much to be concerned about. His placement on the 60-day IL will be retroactive to when he was first placed on the Injured List at the start of the season. The Mets simply transferred him to the 60-day IL to open up a 40-man roster spot, which they used to claim St. John from the Cubs.

deGrom's timetable to return from his shoulder injury will remain largely the same. The transfer to the 60-day IL, fortunately, does not mean that deGrom will need another two months on the sideline, rather it's just a sign that the Mets are trying to take advantage of each of their roster spots while deGrom is on the mend.

The loss of deGrom was a big concern for the Mets, but they've played excellently in his absence. When he's able to return, which is expected to occur in June, he'll take his usual place atop the rotation of one of baseball's best teams.

So, while the update on deGrom certainly isn't what Mets fans were hoping, this move is nothing more than a way for the Mets to gain more flexibility on the 40-man roster.
