The Philadelphia Phillies host the San Francisco Giants as the Phillies aim to avoid the sweep. It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Giants-Phillies prediction and pick.

The start of the new month will showcase an elite pitching matchup between these two elite NL squads. Even though these two stars aren't off to the best start of the season, this game could turn into a pitching duel of both starters are feeling good. The Giants are (27-21) on the season and have taken the first two games of this series. The Phillies are (21-29) on the year and have not yet begun to find their mark this season. Phenom Bryce Harper is playing well this year after his 2021 NL MVP season, but it's not correlating to the team's success. A win today could try and help regain their momentum.

Why The Giants Could Cover The Spread

The Giants are sending out southpaw Carlos Rodon who is not too far removed from a successful stint with the Chicago White Sox. Rodon is (4-4) with a 3.60 ERA in 50 innings pitched. He's lost his last three starts after starting the season (3-1). If you take away his eight earned-run outing against the St. Louis Cardinals back on May 15, then his ERA would look a lot better.

The offense is starting to click for the Giants. Joc Peterson is hitting out of his mind right now as he is smashing multiple home runs per series it seems like. Peterson launched a 428-foot bomb in the 11th inning last night to take a 7-4 lead over the Phillies. That proved to be the winner and if Peterson is still hot, then expect him to be a factor once again Wednesday night.

With Mike Yaztremski and Luis Gonzalez also hitting the ball well, the Giants offense is in a good spot right now. Gonzalez smashed two doubles in his four-hit performance last night and this lineup full of lefties should be able to attack the Phillies' pitching early.

Why The Phillies Could Cover The Spread

Aaron Nola will get the start for the Phillies tonight. The right-hander is (2-4) on the yar with a 3.56 ERA in 60.2 innings. It hasn't been the greatest year for him but the good news is he pitched very well against the Atlanta Braves in his last start. He went 8.1 innings giving up five hits and one run. Nola struck out 10 against a good Braves lineup and that may have gotten him back on track. His two starts prior were against the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers, where he gave up a combined six runs in 12 innings.

Harper is doing all he can to keep the Phillies alive. Kyle Schwarber is mashing home runs, but his average sits below .200. Other lefty Didi Gregorius is on the 10-day IL and Jean Segura is banged up right now after leaving last night's game with an injury. The Giants are also dealing with a few injuries but both sides are healthy for the most part.

The Phillies lineup needs to really get going. They are hitting well, but they are getting timely hits. Harper is the only hitter batting over .300 which is not a good sign for this team. If Rhys Hoskins and Nick Castellanos can pick up the slack then this offense can really start to get going.

Final Giants-Phillies Prediction & Pick

With the way this series has gone, the Giants seem to be playing like the clear better team. Although, sweeping is tough in this league, and with Nola on the bump for the Phillies, I think it will be close. It's too tough to tell who will pull through. The under seems probable as well as this pitching matchup should be a good one.

Final Giants-Phillies Prediction & Pick: Under 8 (-105)
