The NBA is targeting a slightly earlier restart to their 2019-20 season — July 30, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. This new date would be a mere day before their previous target of July 31.

This new change would have the NBA return on a Thursday instead of a Friday, which could give longtime broadcast partner TNT a slate of games to put on without having to wait until the following week.

Normally, TNT has its broadcast rights set up for Thursdays while ESPN runs its programming on Wednesdays and Fridays. ABC has matinee Sundays set up for the broadcasting of NBA games while league partner NBA TV takes the remaining days of the week.

Besides getting a leg up on resuming the season sooner, it’s important to note that the league agreed to the eight regular-season “seeding” games as a way to make up for lost revenue — in hopes to salvage as much broadcast money as possible.

Starting the season a day sooner would give them an extra day of revenue from one of its longtime partners in TNT — a benefit that would be passed on to the players in the revenue-sharing process.

The NBA left plenty of room for change when agreeing to a truncated resumption of the 2019-20 NBA season, noting the dates provided during the Board of Governors meeting were tentative and subject to change.

While one day of difference won’t skew plans for players, staff, or the accommodating parties, it could mean a pretty significant boost in revenue by giving the season “re-opener” a chance to shine on TNT.
