The Atlanta Hawks would have been Andre Drummond's preferred destination if the Detroit Pistons traded him, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

The Pistons are having a hard time finding a trade partner for Drummond since he can become an unrestricted free agent after this season ends.

The Hawks will most likely pursue Drummond in free agency if the All-Star big man declines his 2020-21 player option unless they acquire Clint Capela from the Houston Rockets:

One league source told The Athletic that Andre Drummond made it clear that if he was traded, Atlanta would have been a preferred destination. The Hawks decided to not part ways with the Brooklyn first-round pick they own to acquire him. They could circle back to Drummond in free agency if he chooses to opt out of his player option and they can’t make a move for any of the centers listed above.

Drummond has appeared in 48 games for the Pistons this season. He’s averaging 17.5 points, 15.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 58.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Detroit isn’t expected to make the playoffs this season, which is why many believe they should move Drummond and get some assets in return. However, teams don’t want to trade for Drummond by giving up a lot since he could potentially be a rental player.

The Pistons will get back on the court on Wednesday for a matchup with the Phoenix Suns, while the Hawks will hit the road to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves.
