Kenny Atkinson reportedly started to understand he had lost his most critical players on the Brooklyn Nets, according to The Athletic.

Atkinson and the Nets mutually parted ways on Saturday. It is believed that most of the players on the Nets had started to grow tired of Atkinson:

To be clear, a directive from Irving or Durant was not given to fire Atkinson. Marks and his front office are leaders of the franchise. The proper research must be done, and gathering a pulse of the franchise is always ongoing. The belief had been that the stakeholders involved in the franchise would evaluate everything at season’s end. However, enough information had been gathered prior to that, and even Atkinson, sources said, started to understand he had lost his most critical players. As a result, the Nets’ front office had to take all of the information it had at its disposal to make a difficult decision.

Jacque Vaughn will assume duties as interim head coach of the Nets for the remainder of the season. Brooklyn is in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Atkinson had a 118-190 record over three-plus seasons with the Nets. He will probably be picked up by some team in the summer.

Kyrie Irving played in only 20 games this season because of his shoulder injury which required surgery, while Kevin Durant hasn’t played all season due to his Achilles tear. Look, even if Durant and Irving wanted Atkinson gone, Nets GM Sean Marks isn’t going to admit that to the media.

Brooklyn's coaching vacancy will be a job a lot of coaches want since the team will be title contenders next season once Durant and Irving suit up together.
