Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving issued a statement on Friday instead of speaking to reporters on Zoom before the start of training camp.

Irving said he's ready to let his work on and off the court speak for himself this season (via ESPN's Malika Andrews).

The Nets will be title contenders this season with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving leading the way. Brooklyn hired two-time MVP Steve Nash as its new head coach and brought on Mike D'Antoni and Amar'e Stoudemire as assistant coaches.

One of the best players in the NBA, Irving appeared in only 20 games with the Nets last season due to injuries. He averaged 27.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists while shooting 47.8 percent from the field, 39.4 percent from beyond the arc and 92.2 percent from the free-throw line.

The Nets got swept by the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the 2020 playoffs at Walt Disney World in the NBA bubble. The team played without Durant, Irving, DeAndre Jordan, Spencer Dinwiddie and Taurean Prince.

Since he's one of the most polarizing players in the league, Irving's decision to release a statement instead of talking to reporters on Zoom will rub some people the wrong way. At this point in his career, though, Irving doesn't really care about appeasing people. He's just focused on his craft as a basketball player, which is just fine with the Nets.
