With Thursday Night Football headed to Amazon, the network is looking for someone to step in as the face of its football broadcast. According to recent reports from Andrew Marchand of the NY Post, Amazon has honed in on Kirk Herbstreit as a top target for its NFL coverage. Amazon has swung and missed on its previous three candidates, Troy Aikman, Sean McVay, and John Lynch, and is now reportedly turning its attention to Herbstreit, who is the lead analyst on ESPN's College GameDay, and the network's top college football commentator.

According to the NY Post, language in Herbstreit's contract would not prevent him from calling NFL games for another entity while also remaining in his role at ESPN. The Post did acknowledge that ESPN could attempt to prevent Herbstreit from joining Amazon, depending on the specific wording used in his contract. Herbstreit reportedly makes as much as $6 million per year at ESPN, but a deal with Amazon would likely be worth significantly more.

Reports indicated that Amazon had offered Aikman a “huge” deal, and were prepared to offer McVay as much as $100 million over five years in order to get him in the booth. It stands within reason that a similarly lucrative offer could be awaiting Herbstreit, should his contract enable him to pursue this venture.

It's been speculated that landing Herbstreit would be part of Amazon's greater plan to bring Al Michaels to the network, having already poached former NBC producer Fred Gaudelli, who has a close relationship with Michaels, for its Thursday Night Football coverage. If Herbstreit were to join Amazon's TNF broadcast, he would still continue covering college football for ESPN, according to the Post.
