The NFL plans to focus on a new voter-registration initiative for its players at the time where athletes have been completely vocal about social justice goals in the U.S.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

The NFL held a virtual meeting of the minds on Thursday, and the first issue tackled by the league’s owners was addressing the lack of information and awareness about voting, per NFL.com’s Kevin Petra.

Petra adds that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who released a video earlier in June apologizing for the league’s handling of players kneeling during the national anthem (without specifically naming free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick), spoke to multiple players about how voting is a a specific area they want the professional football league to focus on. This appears to be a unifying issues about franchise owners, executives and players, too. The Kansas City Chiefs are putting together a voter registration initiative of their own.

Social activism among players has had a heightened focus in the last four weeks, complete with a video covertly put together by the NFL media team behind the backs of higher-ups, as players banded together to virtually record a message of unity, peace and praising the Black Lives Matter movement. New Orleans Saints star wide receiver Michael Thomas was among those spearheading the initiative, which drove Goodell to respond in kind, supporting the players’ voices.

One way to address a political system failing the players and their cause to help minority groups is to vote out those politicians. And voting appears to be on the priority list for the NFL.
