The 2022 NFL Offseason is in full swing, and teams are making trades and transactions left and right. However, three teams are also working on changing the overtime rules throughout the league. The Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts submitted rules change proposals to the league.

NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted the news Wednesday morning.

The three teams want to modify NFL Rule 16, which states the “modified sudden-death” rules of the current NFL overtime. As the rules stand right now, if the first possession results in a touchdown, the game is over.

These two organizations proposed that both teams be given the opportunity to possess the ball in overtime. This means that even if the first possession results in a touchdown, the opposing team still has a chance to perform on offense.

Meanwhile, the Titans proposed that both teams be given the opportunity to possess the ball, unless the first possession results in a touchdown and a successful two-point try. This proposal is a slightly less drastic change to the current NFL rules.

The controversy surrounding Rule 16 began when multiple playoff games ended in overtime. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills in overtime in their Divisional Round matchup. Just a week later, the Chiefs fell to the Cincinnati Bengals in dramatic overtime loss in the AFC Championship.

None of the three teams with rules change proposals were involved with the postseason overtime drama. The Titans played one overtime game in the regular season, while the Colts played in two. Meanwhile, all of the Eagles' games ended in regulation.
