Ahead of their duel with the Golden State Warriors last Tuesday, Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone admitted that facing the defending champions is the same as facing any other team is the same to him.

Per Duvalier Johnson of Mile High Sports, Malone admitted that he understood the hype surrounding their matchup against the defending champions. However, from his perspective, playing with them is the same as playing the Phoenix Suns.

”I understand why that’s the case. First place team, second place and all that but to me playing Phoenix and Golden State, same thing.”

The Nuggets and the Warriors are the top two teams in the Western Conference today. Given this fact, some expect this match-up to be a preview of the Western Conference Finals.

The Warriors are simply showing off their consistency. For four years now, they're considered the best team in the entire league. The Nuggets, meanwhile, are surprising everyone this season of their stellar play. Credit is given to Malone's coaching and the play of star center Nikola Jokic, who many believe is a legitimate MVP candidate.

Yet, amid the Nuggets' early success and the hype now surrounding them, Malone seems focused at the task at hand. They take it one possession, one play, and one game at a time. That could be a major reason for their success.
