There was some hope that Aaron Rodgers would see some playing time on Thursday in the Green Bay Packers' preseason contest. Some back tightness prevented him from playing but he is expected to return to practice on Sunday.

“Yeah, that’s the plan, but you know, a lot of it is going to be predicated on how he feels,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “I think he feels better, but we’ll see Sunday.

The injury doesn't seem to be serious but Green Bay will be cautious with their franchise quarterback. Injuries have become an issue for Rodgers in recent seasons, but this one shouldn't keep him sidelined for long.

Heading into Thursday, the Packers laid out a plan to deploy Rodgers to allow him to build some experience in LaFleur's offense. As a precaution, they held him out and now his chances of playing the preseason are dwindling.

Last year, Rodgers took just seven snaps throughout the preseason. However, that was in Mike McCarthy's offense that Rodgers already had previous experience with.

This season, Rodgers has had to adjust to a new offensive system for the first time since 2006. LaFleur is expected to bring some life to the Packers offense in 2019 with a more modern approach.

The Packers have failed to reach the playoffs in the past two seasons due to the struggles of the entire team. In 2018, Rodgers suffered a knee injury in Week 1 of the regular season, but he managed to play in all 16 games.

As Rodgers turns 36-years old this year, the Packers are hoping to prevent any injuries to their longtime gunslinger. The signal-caller is unlikely to suit up in the preseason finale but he could receive some playing time against the Oakland Raiders in their third preseason game in Winnipeg.
