The Green Bay Packers fell short of punching their ticket to Super Bowl LIV. If there is a silver lining to the end of the 2019 NFL season for them, it is that general manager Brian Gutekunst can shift gears toward looming free agency.

The Packers were not shy about making some additions to their defense last offseason. Gutekunst has indicated that they will take a less aggressive approach in free agency this time around, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Gutekunst said at a Friday press conference that there will be “a little bit more restrictions if we’re going to do everything we want with the guys who are here” this offseason.

Green Bay made headlines with how active they were in free agency last year since it had notably gone against their usual conservative approach after bringing in safety Adrian Amos along with linebackers Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith. However, Gutekunst's comments indicate that it may have been a necessary outlier in their attempts to get back on track following a disappointing 2018 campaign.

Rather than gauge the market to upgrade their roster, it appears the Packers will be looking to keep some of their in-house options for the long haul. They have a number of key players currently set to test the waters of free agency including right tackle Bryan Bulaga, linebacker Blake Martinez, and cornerback Tramon Williams. It seems Gutekunst will do what he can to avoid too much turnover to the roster heading into the 2020 NFL season.
