The Green Bay Packers' rebuilt defense far exceed expectations in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. Green Bay held its longtime division rivals to just three points in a season-opening victory at Soldier Field, frustrating Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky while keeping coach Matt Nagy's innovative rushing attack in check.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine discussed several of the Packers' new additions on that side of the ball on Thursday, specifically singling out Adrian Amos, Za'Darius Smith, and Preston Smith – three high-priced signings in free agency.

“Evaluating Adrian, that was pretty easy,” he said of Amos, per Packers Wire's Zach Kruse. “The other safety down there (in Chicago) is a pretty good player and made more splash plays, but when you look at Adrian’s level of consistency and knowing people who have worked with him, coached him, just his professionalism and communication and how he makes the guys around him better. That showed up last Thursday night. I know he made the big play, but just his level of consistency through the game, making sure we were lined up, making the plays he was supposed to make.”

Amos, who played his first four seasons with Chicago, got the last laugh against his former team, intercepting Trubisky in the end zone late in the fourth quarter to seal a Packers victory.

While Pettine saved most of his praise for Za'Darius Smith, he was clearly pleased with fellow pass-rusher Preston Smith, too.

“Myself and (outside linebackers coach) Mike Smith and I went through it, and Za’Darius was a guy that just jumped off the tape, and not far behind was Preston,” he said. “The fact that we ended up getting both, we would have been thrilled with one of those guys. The fact that we could pull that off was a tremendous move by Gutey and his group.”

The pair combined for eight tackles, two tackles for loss, two and-a-half sacks, and six quarterback hits against the Bears.

The scariest part about Green Bay's defense? Considering the unit has so many new faces playing prominent roles, including a pair of first-round rookies, it should get even better as the regular season wears on.
