It’s no secret that the Green Bay Packers have interest in current Northwestern Wildcats head coach Pat Fitzgerald, but the feeling seems not mutual.

Following the Wildcats’ 31-20 win over the Utah Utes in the Holiday Bowl on Monday, Fitzgerald announced that he’s not going anywhere and plans to stay put as the college program’s head coach. In other words, Fitzgerald has shut the proverbial door on the Packers.

That said, the Packers are not about to lose hope in having at least a sit-down interview with Fitzgerald, per Tom Silverstein and Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Despite Pat Fitzgerald's public comments that he’s staying at Northwestern, the Green Bay Packers are still hopeful they can speak with the Wildcats coach this week.

It’s one thing for the Packers to get Fitzgerald to interview with them. It’s another to change his mind and coax him into leaving Evanston for Lambeau Field. Both appear to be difficult tasks as of the moment, especially because of Fitzgerald’s announcement and the success he’s having in Northwestern, but the Packers appear to be willing to wait.

Pat Fitzgerald isn’t the only figure the Packers are focused on in their current search for a new full-time head coach. Green Bay has already interviewed a pair of experienced candidates in Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano.

The Packers finished the 2018 NFL season with a disappointing 6-9-1 record that was not enough for them to sneak into the playoffs. The franchise has now failed to make the postseason in back-to-back years and is facing plenty of questions in the offseason.
