The once wide receiver whose abilities have made him one of the better running backs in the league is an extremely smart football player.

He's so smart, in fact, he understands the reason for why he and his running back-teammates behind Aaron Rodgers are so terrific as a group. It's due to the fact each of them brings something unique to the table, via Mike Spofford of the official Green Bay Packers website.

“That’s what you want,” Montgomery said, via the team’s website. “You want to know your teammates — even though you’re all fighting for a job — you want to know no matter who’s in the game, that guy is going to get the job done. If Aaron’s in the game or Jamaal’s in the game or I’m in the game, we all bring something different, and everything that we bring has been effective. You want that. You want depth, you want versatility. I’m excited for what this room brings to the table.”

Montgomery, 25, unofficially made the switch to running back during the 2016 season. The Packers experienced ridiculous injuries and were forced to look elsewhere for a back. Montgomery bravely stepped up and filled in to the tune of 457 yards and three touchdowns (5.9 yards per carry average).

Montgomery was expected to carry the load en route to a huge season in 2017—now the official starting back in cheese country—but could never recover after a horrid start. Through an injury-plagued season that saw the kid dress for just eight games, he couldn't even muster 300 yards for the season.

Along with Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams, Montgomery will face still competition this coming August. Rest assured, all three will receive a fair shot as head coach Mike McCarthy has already stated that a running back by committee will makeup the Green Bay Packers rushing attack during the 2018 NFL season.
