In the last couple of seasons, Ty Montgomery has undergone the transition from wide receiver over to running back for the Green Bay Packers.

However, this brief position change could come to an end in 2018 as Rob Demovsky of ESPN has speculated that the Packers could be interested in moving him back to wide receiver.

It's time for the first one about a return to receiver for Montgomery.

It might be what is best for both the Packers and the fourth-year pro in 2018.

Yes, Montgomery and his coaches devoted more than a year to his development as a running back after he made the midseason position switch in 2016. But if last season showed one thing, it's that the Packers found two capable players who are running backs by trade in Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones. It might be the one position on offense where former general manager Ted Thompson didn't leave a hole.

Montgomery proved to be an effective runner in his limited action rushing for 273 yards on 71 carries with three touchdowns, but that came with a price to his health. He was limited to just eight games due to rib and wrist injuries with the latter cutting his season short placing him on the injured reserve due to surgery.

In his first three years, durability has been a legitimate concern for Montgomery only playing in 29 out of the possible 48 games in the regular season. On top of that, the running back position is more a physically wearing position that will only continue to pound away at his body.

What will also factor into this equation is that both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams have demonstrated that they are fully capable of being high-impact running backs. In the 2017 season, the duo combined for 1,008 rushing yards with eight touchdowns while Williams was a factor in the passing game hauling in 25 catches for 262 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

All of this along with the Packers possibly parting ways with Randall Cobb only makes it reasonable for Montgomery to move back to his original position. It may just be a matter of time before Montgomery is back lining up at wide receiver full-time.
