There is a good chance that Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will see preseason action this Thursday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to head coach Ron Rivera via ESPN’s David Newton. It depends, in part, on how Newton feels about his body on that day.

“The big key for us is how he feels in the morning just to make sure nothing is sore or tightened,” coach Ron Rivera said. “But he looked really good.

“He and I talked at the end of practice and one thing he told me was he still feels like his timing is off as well as his decision-making. It’ll be with him the reps. As long as he’s getting quality reps and we’re not overusing him, he’s going to be fine.”

Still, at this point, he's set to debut:

The Panthers have played in two preseason games so far, with the trio of Derek Anderson, Garrett Gilbert, and Joe Webb sharing the quarterback duties. While a Newton preseason appearance appears imminent, it doesn’t seem that the former Auburn Tiger is going to see many reps. The Panthers are going to play it cautious with Newton, who went under the knife to treat a shoulder injury back in March.

After guiding the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2015, Newton regressed last season, passing for 3,509 yards (19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions) and rushing for 359 yards (five rushing scores) in 2016.

Newton and the Panthers kick off their 2017-18 season with a game in Santa Clara against the San Francisco 49ers on September 10.
