It was all but confirmed earlier this week, but head coach Matt Rhule finally announced that Cam Newton will start for the Panthers this weekend. According to Rhule, Newton “will take the first snap.” The Panthers head coach also noted that quarterback P.J. Walker will play an active role in Sunday's matchup against the Washington Football Team.

“We have plays for Cam, plays for P.J.,” he said. “P.J. we think is an excellent quarterback, Cam can make a difference, so we'll use both of them.”

Newton has taken snaps in one game so far this season for the Panthers in their victory in Arizona last Sunday. He recorded one passing touchdown and eight passing yards, as well has 14 rushing yards. This week, he is expected to have a much bigger role.

As stated earlier, this announcement on Friday comes as no surprise to anyone in the world of the NFL. All signs were pointing to Newton starting on Sunday, and even “trends.” Panthers reporter Joe Person tweeted this quote from Matt Rhule on Wednesday afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers and their reacquainted starting quarterback are looking to break their 0.500 record of 5-5. Week 11 might be the perfect time to get their heads above water. They are expected to pull out a home win against the 3-6 Washington Football Team. It will be interesting to see how this new, yet familiar, dynamic of Newton in Carolina fits with the rest of the offense.
