Remember when some people thought that Kyle Allen was the Carolina Panthers' quarterback of the future? Well, those days are over.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Panthers have traded Allen to the Washington Redskins, with Ian Rapoport of NFL Network adding that Carolina acquired a fifth-round draft pick in return.

The Panthers signed former XFL signal-caller P.J. Walker on Monday, so now, Carolina has Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton, Will Grier and Walker manning the quarterback position.

Of course, that rotation could look awfully different by the time Week 1 comes around. The Panthers are trying to trade Newton, and with Carolina owning the seventh overall pick in the NFL Draft next month, the club could draft a quarterback.

Allen stepped in as the Panthers' starting quarterback in Week 3 of this past season after Newton went down with a foot injury. The 24-year-old got off to a strong start, leading Carolina to four straight wins, but after that, Allen began to struggle.

In 13 appearances and 12 starts overall, Allen threw for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while completing 62 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 80.

He was supplanted by Grier under center for the final couple of games.

Allen, who played his collegiate football at Texas A&M and Houston, went undrafted in 2018.

The Redskins took their own quarterback in the first round of the draft in 2019, selecting Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick. While Allen hardly seems like a threat to dethrone Haskins, Washington does not seem 100 percent committed to Haskins heading into 2020.
