The Carolina Panthers saw their playoff hopes take a significant blow after Monday's loss to the New Orleans Saints that have put them on the brink of elimination heading into the final two games of the regular season.
It has also put into question head coach Ron Rivera's job security beyond this campaign given how things have transpired. BetOnline.ag has now placed odds on the next head coach in the NFL to be fired that has put Rivera currently ahead as the frontrunner in that regard.
This has been a troubling year for the Panthers that once had much promise as they had been on pace to potentially secure one of the best records in the league holding a 6-2 record through the first eight games played. However, the blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers triggered a steep slid down the standings over the last several weeks as they have dropped their last six straight games that have put them nearly out of the playoff picture entirely.
It has been a string of disappointing losses that have continued to pile up that doesn't appear to have a light at the end of the tunnel this season. Granted, much of this has been impacted by the shoulder injury that star quarterback Cam Newton continues to play through. It has become clearer with every game that his throwing motion and strength is limited and preventing him from truly being able to utilize his unique skill set behind his strong arm.
Nonetheless, it will be a decision that the new ownership group will take a look at this upcoming offseason. Rivera has the body of work that should give him a strong chance of returning as he holds a 73-59-1 record while helping push the team to the playoffs in four out of his first eight years that including reaching the postseason in four out of the last six campaigns with three NFC South division titles and a trip to the Super Bowl.
