The New England Patriots are seemingly on the hunt for a quality wide receiver heading into the NFL’s Oct. 30 trade deadline. Earlier it was reported that they have their eyes on Denver Broncos wideout Demaryius Thomas. Now, another notable name has emerged: Detroit Lions wide receiver Golden Tate.

While reiterating the Pats’ desire to go after Thomas, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network divulged that Tate is another offensive piece New England is looking to bring in to Foxboro.

They are particularly interested in Demaryius Thomas and Golden Tate. Tomorrow should be interesting.

The Patriots recently traded for Josh Gordon, but the talented receiver has already made a negative impression on the team for violating the team’s rule on punctuality. While it’s a minor violation, it’s another misstep in Gordon’s career which has had plenty of it before.

By showing interest in Thomas and Tate despite having Gordon indicates that the Patriots’ are inclined to add a reliable and consummate pro, qualities that fit the profile of the Lions’ wideout.

Golden Tate, who hasn’t been fined or suspended since 2013, is a steady producer downfield. This season, he has 517 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions on 44 catches.

The Lions are reportedly open to trading Tate, but for a price that should blow them away, so the Patriots will have to come up with a much more convincing package than the one they gave up to acquire Gordon from the Browns. In that trade, the Pats needed just to cough up a fifth-round draft pick.

However, New England is also definitely mindful of the fact that Tate is set to become a free agent at the end of this season. Tate is likely going to be just a rental player for the Pats if such a trade happens, so finding a middle ground between the Lions and the Patriots is going to be crucial with so little time before the trade window closes.
