Instead of further exploring options to trade wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, the New England Patriots ultimately decided to cut loose the former fourth-round pick on Monday.

Mitchell has struggled with injuries for most of his young career. He did not play a single snap last season because of knee issues. He was also having trouble participating during this summer’s workouts with the Patriots and was barely seen on the field during training camp.

Speaking in front of the media during Tuesday’s press conference, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick offered his thoughts about the unfortunate turn of Mitchell’s career, via Tyler Sullivan of 247 Sports.

“He did everything he could. He did everything he could. It's unfortunate that it didn't work out,” Belichick said. “I don't know how much more he could've put into it than he did.”

Mitchell reportedly underwent a procedure on his knee last month in hopes of it expediting his recovery process, but it obviously did not matter, with New England eventually releasing him.

When healthy, Malcolm Mitchell is capable of wreaking havoc down the field. In 14 games played for the Pats in his rookie season in 2016, he caught 32 passes and turned them into 401 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

The best moment in his brief stint in New England came in Super Bowl LI in which he caught six of Tom Brady’s seven looks at him for 70 yards, helping the Pats complete a huge comeback to defeat the Atlanta Falcons.
