The tragic death of Lakers icon Kobe Bryant this past weekend not only sent shockwaves through the basketball world; it reached other sports as well. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick released a statement online regarding the loss of the NBA legend per Field Yates of ESPN.

In the statement, Belichick addressed the time that Bryant came and spoke to the Patriots two years prior while also speaking on the basketball legend's impact on sports, the community and those around him.

Bryant, was, of course, one of nine victims in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. Also among the accident's victims was Bryant's 13-year-old daughter Gigi. The helicopter was reportedly on its way to a travel basketball game prior to the incident.

At only 41 years old, Bryant passed away as one of the greatest players in NBA history. The former Los Angeles Lakers star was named to 18 All-Star games during his 20-year career, was named as league MVP for the 2007-08 season and was a five-time NBA champion.

The head coach for the Patriots since 2000, Belichick has won six Superbowls for the Patriots, has been named as the league's coach of the year three times and is considered one of the best coaches in football history.

This season, after a 12-4 regular season, Bill Belichick and the Patriots were upset by the Tennessee Titans in the Wild card round of the playoffs.
