It was announced on Thursday that Cam Newton has won the starting quarterback job for the New England Patriots. Besides being named the starting quarterback, Newton was named as one of New England's team captains, per the team's official Twitter account.

When the Patriots signed Newton back in June, it almost seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would start under center. However, the team gave second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham a chance to earn the job as well. But on Thursday, after weeks of Newton impressing in training camp, he was officially named the starter in Week 1.

While Newton flourished with the Carolina Panthers, he was voted as a team captain early in his career. Therefore, he isn't new to being a player that is regarded as a beacon of light or a mentor for the entire team. We all know that Newton doesn't lack in the energy department and can motivate his teammates in a variety of ways.

Aside from Newton, the other offensive captains are James White and David Andrews. On the other hand, J'Whaun Bentley, Lawrence Guy, and Devin and Jason McCourty are the defensive captains.

Newton was the only first-year player on the Patriots to earn the honors of being a captain. That goes to show how much his new teammates have respected him ever since he arrived in Foxborough.

Some questioned whether or not Bill Belichick would be open to having Newton lead his team at quarterback. Seeing that he's now an offensive captain for the Patriots, the answer to that argument is a resounding yes.
