The New England Patriots absolutely demolished the Philadelphia Eagles in the latest preseason game on Thursday night. Bill Belichick's team cruised to a 35-0 win and looked to be in midseason form. However, the quarterback battle between Cam Newton and Mac Jones continues to complicate itself after both players had impressive performances.

After the game, Newton– the Patriots' incumbent– had a simple response to his performance, according to Mike Giardi of NFL.com.

“Just tried to do my job…That's all I did.”

Newton did just that. Hd started the game and went 8-9 for 103 yards and a touchdown, in the process throwing a couple of dimes to his wideouts and showing Belichick that he is more than capable of running the Patriots' offense.

As for Mac Jones, he went 13-19 for 146 yards with no scores as the Patriots went heavily to the running game as they approached the endzone. Still, the Alabama product was also impressive, causing even more confusion to Belichick and the Patriots coaching staff as they have one more preseason game until the regular season starts.

The rookie caught eyes with a huge deep ball to N'Keal Harry. Unfortunately, the receiver couldn't haul it in and ended up being injured on the play. Nonetheless, an impressive throw by Jones, who himself is making a strong case for the Patriots starting gig.

But, after the second preseason game, it appears that Newton hasn't done anything to lose the job, at least not yet. The Patriots will conclude their preseason slate against the New York Giants on August 29, and all eyes will be on the quarterback battle once again.
