The rumor mill strikes again as Marcus Mariota is the betting favorite to become the New England Patriots starting quarterback next year, per Pro Football Talk. Mariota has had quite the roller coaster of a career. Playing in just one game for the Las Vegas Raiders this last season, Mariota put on quite the performance. He finished with 226 passing yards and a touchdown.

The current odds of Marcus Mariota being traded to the New England Patriots are 5/2.

He seemed to be playing like his former self before losing all confidence in the Tennessee Titans. Having Jon Gruden in his ear, and taking a season to learn, may have paid dividends for the former Oregon Duck.

Additionally, with recent news of the Raiders potentially giving Derek Carr an extension, trading away the “Flyin' Hawaiin” could give Las Vegas a pick in the upcoming NFL draft. As for the Patriots, the franchise is in a tough situation since Tom Brady's departure. They finished with a 7-9 record and had one of the worst offenses in the league in 2020.

This is exactly the type of opportunity Mariota needs. He, and Jameis Winston, both failed to maintain their starting roles for their former teams. However, each of them took a year off to sit and learn. With both Mariota and Winston having similar career paths so far, it'll be interesting to see where each of them goes next year. They have the potential to each have a full resurrection with a new franchise.

For New England, this is possibly the best move they could make. They're possibly too far back in the draft to land one of the top talented quarterbacks in the draft. Also, it's not like they're a desirable destination in the league right now either. With Mariota under center, he could provide what the Patriots were missing from a year ago – a quarterback who can actually get the ball to the receivers.
