The New England Patriots were unusually quiet at the trade deadline. Their silence has led to speculation about their possible intentions for the 2019 NFL Draft.

New England has done a solid job of stockpiling picks this year. According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, it could be an attempt to draft the successor to quarterback Tom Brady:

One aspect that I believe prevented the Patriots from making any trades today was that they seem to be collecting draft picks for 2019, not trading them away, with the idea of taking a QB. Currently have 1, 2, 2, 3 and possibly two more compensatory 3s

Of course, it is still far too early to draw any conclusions from their collection of draft picks. However, the notion of potentially moving up to draft their next franchise quarterback does not seem to be too far-fetched.

The Patriots have made a habit of reeling in big names at the trade deadline. However, they seemed content with their personnel this year. Either that or they could already be eyeing a couple of college prospects. Although Brady is coming off an MVP season, his performance this year indicates that he is still nearing the end of his playing days in New England. New England has always managed to secure a potential backup for him whether it was Jimmy Garoppolo or Jacoby Brissett. Unfortunately, they are still lacking in that regard.

New England is never in a position to draft a quarterback high thanks to their success in the regular season every year. Fortunately, they appear to have more than enough picks to trade up to a decent spot if the player is worth it.
