The New England Patriots knew what they were getting into when they traded for wide receiver Josh Gordon back in September. They completely understand that he had had issues with substance abuse in the past, so they made sure to monitor him, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

However, during the Patriots' bye weekend back on Nov. 18, sources believe that Gordon slipped out of the grasp of the Patriots' security team.

Now, Gordon finds himself suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy yet again.

On Thursday, Gordon tweeted that he was stepping away from the game of football to focus on his mental health. That was the same day the NFL levied yet another suspension against the 27-year-old.

Gordon missed two entire seasons in 2015 and 2016 as a result of substance abuse. He was reinstated last year and played in five games for the Cleveland Browns. He was then traded from the Browns to the Patriots early this season.

The wideout appeared to be on the right track this year, hauling in 41 receptions for 737 yards and four touchdowns and representing one of New England's top threats in what is now a rather limited aerial attack.

But, it seems that Gordon will need to attempt to get things together once again.

It's a shame, as Gordon is one of the most gifted receivers in the league.

During his second year in the NFL back in 2013, Gordon racked up 87 catches for a league-leading 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns, en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection.

Whether or not he will ever get another opportunity to match that production remains to be seen.
