Bruce Ellington's time with the Patriots is over before it even got started. New England released the veteran receiver Wednesday after inking him to a one-year deal back in mid-March.

Ellington is a former fourth round pick of the 49ers in 2014 out of South Carolina and most recently split his time during the 2018 season with the Houston Texans and the Detroit Lions. The 27-year old receiver was released by the Texans in October after suffering a hamstring injury and being placed on injured reserve.

He was later picked up by the Lions, where he played in four games, totaling 23 receptions on 30 targets for 132 yards.

In 44 games played in his career, Ellington has totaled 79 receptions for 769 yards and five touchdowns.

With the addition of  first-round pick N'Keal Harry, the need to have the likes of Ellington on the roster seemingly grew less necessary. With Ellington gone, the Patriots receiver depth chart currently consists of Julian Edelman, Harry, Phillip Dorsett, Braxton Berrios, Demaryius Thomas, Maurice Harris, Damoun Patterson, Jakobi Meyers, Ryan David and Xavier Ubosi.

The move makes room for the team to sign former Broncos offensive tackle Jared Veldheer, who is reportedly set to sign a one year, $6.5 million deal with New England at some point in the near future. The Patriots were delaying the Veldheer signing to get over the NFL's deadline of free agent signings counting against the compensatory pick formula.
