In typical New England Patriots fashion, the reigning Super Bowl champions didn't go out of their way to make a big splash in the offseason's free agency period.

Not to mention the fact that the Pats are well-aware that opposing teams will be vulturing their roster for players looking for more lucrative deals following a career-defining Super Bowl win.

New England just lost two of its key pieces in defensive end Trey Flowers and offensive guard Trent Brown on Tuesday. In turn, the team will likely settle for a pair of third-round compensatory draft picks, which isn't really an immediate sign of improvement heading into 2019.

On Wednesday, the Patriots made one of their first moves in the offseason. However, it appears to be a low-impact move at that, let alone an exciting one to boot.

Ian Rapoport broke the news on Twitter that the Pats will be reuniting with one of their former running backs in Brandon Bolden:

It's quite fascinating to find out exactly what head coach Bill Belichick's reasons are in welcoming back Bolden to Foxborough. For one, The 29-year-old back out of Mississippi didn't really have a huge role in the offense throughout his six-year stay in New England, starting in only six out of the 83 games that he suited up for and racked up just a combined 912 rushing yards and six touchdowns in that span.

Furthermore, Bolden also didn't do much last season in Miami, finishing his quick stint as a Dolphin with 91 rushing yards and three offensive touchdowns.

Bolden might not even see much playing time on offense considering the Patriots' depth at running back with James White, Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead are still on the roster. Perhaps Belichick will count of Bolden's skills as a reliable on special teams instead.

Whatever the Patriots' intentions are with Bolden, the probably have a master plan for him that the rest of the league doesn't know about.

And that's what's ultimately frightening about these low-key moves that the Pats are known for; turning into strokes of genius after all.
